Torn ACL’s, fractured wrists, numerous ankle injuries, pulled muscles and overall soreness have plagued LCA’s Girls Varsity Soccer team this season. Still with these curveballs thrown at the team and their coaches, they have been near perfect. So far LCA GVS is 13-1-1, the one tie coming on the first game of the season against The Winsor School. This tie has since been avenged at Winsor’s own homecoming, where GVS walked in and beat them 3-1.
The only real blemish on the record is the one loss to The Pingree School, where LCA went up to South Hamilton and fought hard to come just short of a win losing 1-0 in the last three minutes. One of GVS’s defenders, Courtney Teehan, described the effect of the loss on the team after the fact saying: “It stung at first, but motivated us to work hard and win our next 7 games.” Not only did GVS win their next 6 games, but did so in impressive fashion. Over this 7 game period, they have scored 39 goals and allowed only two.
Even with all this success, GVS’s true potential is seemingly untapped because of the before mentioned injuries. It’s hard to speculate how the team could have performed without the injury bug, but most would assume that it would be nothing but positive. Goalie and captain Caroline Niland fractured her wrist early in the season, but did not miss a game. Even with this injury, she allowed only 6 goals in 14 games. Last season’s leading scoring, Katie Braga has been struggling with an ankle injury throughout the whole season, but the team has managed to score 70 goals in 15 games.
